Petra Winery
About Petra Winery
Petra Winery is located on the shores of Lake Palić, near Subotica in northern Serbia. It is a small-scale family winery where nature, family, and wine are completely intertwined.
The Gubičak family's estate covers approximately ten hectares. Of this, 6.5 hectares consist of gardens and parkland, and 3.5 hectares are planted with grapevines.
Its direct location on the lake, at an altitude of just 106 meters, creates a unique microclimate. After extensive soil research, the family chose the exact grape varieties and clones that thrive best here: Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Traminer, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.
A winery named after their daughter
Petra's story didn't begin with a grand business plan, but with the birth of the family's middle daughter. Along with her came the idea for their own winery.
The name Petra thus became more than just a brand name. It became a promise to build something lasting for the next generation. A place that does not oppose nature, but works with it.
Good wine originates in the vineyard.
From old farmhouse to family estate
In 2003, the family began developing an old, authentic farmhouse on the shore of Lake Palić.
First, the landscape was tackled. Even before grapevines were planted, the family laid out a monumental garden and redesigned the grounds.
The vineyard was planted in 2009. Approximately 6,250 grapevines were planted per hectare. Four years later, in 2013, the first bottle of Petra wine was produced.
From that moment on, the estate gradually expanded. Not by becoming as large as possible, but by staying true to the original vision: making honest wine in a special place.
Fully organic
In 2016, Petra Winery began the transition to organic viticulture. This was far from common in Serbia at the time.
The family wanted to demonstrate that high-quality wine is possible without disturbing the natural balance of the vineyard.
Since 2021, Petra Winery has both a European and a Serbian certificate for the production of organic grapes and organic wine.
Throughout the entire process, from vineyard to cellar, every step is carefully monitored and recorded.
This approach also earned them the Bioproduct of the Year award at Biofest in 2023.
Wines focused on the grape
In every wine, Petra Winery strives to let the character of the grape speak for itself. No excess, but pure and recognizable wines that match their origin.
Pinot Noir forms an important part of the assortment. The more robust Barrique and Reserva versions are aged in wood, combining red fruit with notes of vanilla and smoke.
The Reserva is only made in exceptional vintage years, when the quality of the grapes is high enough.
From Pinot Grigio, Petra produces not only fresh white wine, but also an organic orange wine. For this, the white grapes are processed using a method normally reserved for red wine.
This gives the wine its coppery color, structure, and pronounced aromas.
Traminer also plays an important role. In addition to a dry, aromatic white wine, Petra makes a sweet Dessert Traminer from late-harvested grapes.
A portion of the grapes are naturally air-dried, resulting in a full golden-yellow wine with aromas of flowers, roses, and dried fruit.
Additionally, the winery produces rosé and a red cuvée of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, among others. According to the winery, these latter grapes are particularly well adapted to the vineyards along Lake Palić.
More than just a winery
Petra Winery is not just a place where wine is produced. The garden, the lake, the animals, and the landscape together form a unified whole.
In 2022, the estate opened its doors to visitors. In the Petra Pavilion, the wine cellar, and the tasting rooms, guests can get acquainted with the wines and the place where they are created.
The combination of modern tasting rooms, wooden barrels, concrete egg-shaped tanks, and the surrounding gardens makes a visit part of the overall story.
Winemaking as a way of life
Petra Winery demonstrates that Serbian wine can be modern, refined, and organic, without losing its personal character.
From the birth of their daughter Petra to the first grapevines, the organic certification, and the opening of the estate: every step is part of the same family story.
